Color Printers for Printing Digital Camera Photos

With your own printer you can enjoy the convenience and control of anytime, at home printing.

The quality of photographs you can print on an inkjet photo printer has dramatically increased over the last few years. And that good news is matched by the fact that prices have decreased. You can now get a great printer for $150.00 to $250.00.

For a perspective on cost, keep in mind that you will need paper and ink on a steady basis. How does it break out? Including ink and glossy photo paper, an 8 x 10 print would cost between $0.80 and $1.20.

Using a Photo Printer

How do you get the photos from your digital camera to your printer? The camera model and type of printer will dictate the mode of transfer.

  • Some digital camera makers such as Canon, also make photo inkjet printers. If both your camera and printer are the same brand, you may have the option to connect the camera directly to the printer. This feature is called "Direct to Printer."
  • Other printers are designed with slots for different types of memory cards. This allows you to remove the memory card from your camera and place it directly into the printer.
  • Some digital cameras and printers, made by different manufacturers, adhere to the PictBridge standard. This standard specifies a method for connecting cameras directly to printers, making them compatible.
  • If none of these conditions apply to your camera and printer, you will connect both your printer and your digital camera or in some cases the memory card, to your computer. You can use your computer to select the photos, manipulate or retouch them and then make your prints.
  • Finally, even if you have the direct to printer option, you might still want to connect to your computer in order to manipulate your pictures and so that you can save them to your computer.
