Software Solutions to Manage Mobile Devices and Data Centers

With the proliferation of wireless devices for business, IT departments are more and more called on not only to manage their data centers and server rooms, but they are being asked to manage hundreds of mobile devices that are now part of their IT infrastructure.

Avocent Corporation has developed two new software solutions for managing data centers as well as PDAs and other mobile devices. AdminSentinel software for mobile devices allows IT managers to access, control and manage their network and data center infrastructure; and MobileSentinel is a software solution that allows IT departments to centrally manage mobile devices. The products run on platforms such as BlackBerry, PocketPC and Palm.

The AdminSentinel software uses a real-time secure proxy model to perform many routine server administrative functions from a mobile device. For example, the administrator can reboot a server, unlock/change passwords, restart services not functioning properly, view event logs, move files and send messages to logged-in users.

MobileSentinel is a software product for the remote control and administration of PDAs and smart phones that connect to a computer network. MobileSentinel adds a new level of network security for mobile devices. IT administrators can monitor all mobile devices for current status, apply passwords to unprotected devices and manage mobile user groups, as well as a number of other functions. For mobile devices that are lost or stolen, MobileSentinel allows an IT administrator to centrally control and wipe out sensitive data. The product is ideally suited for networks that use cellular PDAs and smartphones to support staff in the field.

Free PalmOne Tungstens and Zires Offered as Marketing Candy

A while back, Gratis Network made a big splash when they offered free iPods for participating in an online offer and then referring some friends to do the same.

Today we noticed that another seemingly unrelated group called Tactical Network (aka Tactical Gear, Inc.) has jumped into the fray and is advertising on Google Adwords, presumably offering free Palms. The website shows that you can get one of the following Palms: a Palm One Zire 72, a Palm One Tungsten T3, or a Palm Tungsten C communicator.

According to Burke Jones, Owner of Tactical Gear, "Once a user completes all the requirements their order is kicked up for an account review. We take fraud seriously so we do a thorough review of the account and referrals to insure no fraud was committed. This can take from 7-10 days. If the order is approved we will the place the order for shipment within another 7-10 days." See terms.

Burke's company has been in business since September, 2001 selling products such as flashlights, gun safes and lasers.

Asked whether or not the Free Palms offer is legitimate, Burke said, "We do have a record at the BBB, which is very good, and we would not want to lose that. We have thousands of satisfied customers around the globe from our outdoor product sites. The bottom line is that we will be shipping free Palms as soon as people have completed the requirements."

1 GB Compact Flash Card Prices Plummet

1 GB Compact Flash CardThe price of 1 GB compact flash (CF) cards have come way down, and there are a few 1 GB CF cards now priced from about $70-$80 -- a steal for so much storage! The cards are used in many digital devices, including digital cameras, MP3 players, PDAs, cellular phones and camcorders. Today's overall top seller is the Lexar Media 1 GB CF card (pictured at right).

The Lexar has a sustained write speed of about 4.8 mb per second. If you plan to use your CF card mainly for MP3s or or for storing PDA data, the Lexar should be sufficient. For more demanding usage, such as PDA backups or digital cameras, try a faster CF card, such as the SanDisk 1 GB CF card, which has a 9 mbs write and 10 mbs read speed -- still a steal at under $100:

Panasonic TH-65XVS30U ONYX XVS TVPanasonic has developed a new series of plasma televisions that couples the company's most advanced flat-panel display technology, and a unique glass front panel design that minimizes the TV's frame.

"The entire front panel is masked by a single pane of glass, with no exposed hardware," explains Ed Wolff, Vice President of Panasonic's Display Group. "When the image appears, the frame seems to disappear. All you see are crisp, clear, deep images that seem to float in air."

New Olympus "m:robe" MR-100 & MR-500i -- Mixing Music and Digital Imaging

Starting in early 2005, Olympus will officially enter the digital music market with the launch of two models in its new "m:robe" series of digital music players.

The flagship model of the new Olympus m:robe series is the MR-500i that combines a 20-gigabyte digital music player with a 1.22-megapixel digital camera. The device has a flat touch-screen interface incorporated into a 3.7-inch color VGA LCD display.

There's also a smaller version, the m:robe MR-100 Digital Music Player, a smaller dedicated music player that delivers 5 gigabytes of storage for over 1,200 songs. At 3.5" x 2" x .6" and weighing only 3.5 ounces, the MR-100 is more compact and lightweight than the MR-500i and its minimalist all-black face incorporates a No-Button touch-panel interface with a monochrome 160 x 128 dot-matrix display with striking red LED.

"Unlike traditional digital music players that only allow you to tune out the rest of the world, the m:robe MR-500i actually allows you to tune into the world by taking and experiencing your digital images on their own or together in a remix with your personal selection of music," said Keith Swiderski, Business Development Manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc.

olympus m:robe

The design of the MR-500i is elegantly simple both inside and out, with an easy-to-use interface that eliminates all unnecessary buttons and allows you to organize and access images and music in a way that makes sense.

On the surface, the all-black face of the MR-500i is as flat and smooth as glass, and its contoured body is very compact. Weighing only 7.4 ounces, and measuring 4.3" x 2.9 x .8" it's easy to slip into a pocket, purse or backpack.

The MR-500i 20 GB hard drives will store up to 5,000 songs in WMA or MP3 format. On the VGA LCD display, you can view not just song titles and lyrics, but also the CD art of the musician's work should you choose to upload it to the player.

With the built-in search capability, you can search songs by keyword, album, artist, genre, top 10 hits and favorites, and sort all images in albums at the touch of a finger.

The MR-500i also sports a wired remote that features a two-line LCD display connected to the ear-buds, so you can find a song, skip a song, shuffle the songs in random order, add a song to favorites, adjust the volume or change the display without ever removing the player from its hiding place.

The Digital Camera
Touching the PHOTO icon on the MR-500i main menu instantly transforms it into a 1.22-megapixel digital camera. The VGA touch-screen acts as a large 3.7-inch monitor in which to compose and review images taken with the camera located on the back of the MR-500i. There is no shutter button -- just tap anywhere on the touch-screen and instantly take digital images. You can view the pictures all at once, by album, or by date in a calendar view.

Images and Sound Together
On the screen is also a REMIX icon. "Remix Play" combines both your music and your images into animated slideshows to create a soundtrack for your pictures. First, choose the photos you want to include in the remix. Then select from one of the available Remix Templates -- Flash Back, Tiles, Geometric, or Birthday -- and then choose the song you wish to accompany the remix. It's a great way to put together a slide show with related music for a nice multimedia play-back.

Innovative cinematographer Edward Lachman puts Motorola V710 mobile phones to good creative use to film Street Stories,, 5 short documentary films focusing on how mobile phones have become an integral part of modern day life.

Photomicrographs: Digital Photography & Nanotechnology

MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct. 6, 2004 -- The winning image of the 30th Annual Nikon International Small World Competition represents a range of new possibilities using nanotechnolgy to transform our physical world in ways never before imagined.

Out of 1,200 images submitted from around the globe, only twenty were selected for this year's Small World Photomicrography exhibit. These winners will be recognized tonight at a twilight reception held at Good Morning America's Studios in New York's Times Square, where Nikon will debut the complete gallery of winning photos set to tour science and art museums across the nation beginning January 1, 2005.

The top three images include Mr. Seth Coe-Sullivan's image, a spiderwort flower anther and immature pollen by Dr. Shirley Owens, of the Michigan State University Center for Advanced Microcopy, and an image of differentiating neuronal cells by Dr. Torsten Wittmann of The Scripps Research Institute of Cell Biology.

"This year's 30th Anniversary of Small World recognizes the world's best photomicrographers who make critically important scientific contributions to life sciences, bio-research and materials science. These winners stand on the cusp of a revolution in imaging technology that enable scientific professionals to deepen their research and share their results faster with other scientific professionals who, in turn, build upon their accomplishments.

We are all beneficiaries of their scientific insights and artistic perceptions," said Lee Shuett, executive vice president, Nikon Instruments. "The photomicrographs featured in the gallery of art demonstrate scientific curiosity blended with extraordinary artistic sensibility."

Nikon Instruments also announced today that it will kick off its Small World museum tour throughout the US in January. "The Nikon Small World Exhibit attracts thousands of people of all ages fascinated by these uniquely moving images," said Eric Flem, communications manager, Nikon Instruments. "These photos allow us to share in the special moments of discovery that spark scientific curiosity, and can serve as inspiration to aspiring young scientists."

The Nikon Small World 2004 distinguished panel of judges included Michael Davidson, of Florida State University, Michael Peres, Ph.D., of the Rochester Institute of Technology, Bonnie Stutski, photo editor of Smithsonian Magazine, Ellis Rubenstein, president of the New York Academy of Sciences, and Ted Salmon, Ph.D., of the University of North Carolina.

Now in its 30th year, the Small World contest was founded in 1974 to recognize excellence in photography through the microscope. Each year, Nikon makes the winning images accessible to the public through the Nikon Small World calendar, a national museum tour, and an electronic gallery featured at NikonSallWorld.com. The competition's reputation has grown over the years and is regarded as the leading forum for recognizing beauty and complexity as seen through the microscope. The Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition is open to anyone with an interest in photomicrography. Participants may access entry forms and submit their images in traditional 35mm format, or upload digital images directly at MicroscopyU on the Nikon Web site (http://www.nikonusa.com).

Digital Photography Group to Set Digital Imaging Standards

COLOGNE, Germany, Oct. 3, 2004 -- Eastman Kodak Company, Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd., and Konica Minolta Photo Imaging, Inc. today announced an agreement to jointly develop a set of open standards for the consumer imaging and electronics industries, aimed at the preservation of digital photos and motion images on CDs, DVDs or other media.

As information storage technologies advance, the Picture Archiving and Sharing Standard (PASS) group's intention is to enable digital file compatibility with future playback devices, preserving the satisfying ‘photo experience' that consumers have enjoyed for decades.

The group intends that the new standard will:

  • Define the requirements of digital media authoring/archival, playback, and print enablement for a new generation of products and services;
  • Provide interoperability for pictures, motion images, audio and related content among such future systems;
  • Utilize and unify multiple existing standards, to better meet the consumer's desire to easily store, organize, print and share for generations to come.

"We're looking at this from a consumer's perspective," stated Hisatoyo Kato, director, senior vice president, general manager, Business Development Division, Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. "People need to be confident that their pictures and videos will be readily available to enjoy and share in future decades. With all the different devices and systems that touch those digital files, and with the speed of technological change, creating a standard focused on such future interoperability is critical."

"The standard created by the PASS group will not only satisfy consumers by simplifying picture and video experiences through device interoperability, but will also benefit the entire digital imaging industry. For instance, retail photofinishers and consumer electronics companies, such as manufacturers of DVD players, will be able to utilize the standard for expanded business opportunities," stated Tsuyoshi Miyachi, president and chief executive officer, Konica Minolta Photo Imaging, Inc.
