Ricoh Introduces GPS-Ready Digital Camera

Ricoh Corporation launched a new digital camera today called the Pro G3. The device is a high-resolution digital camera that embeds captured images with GPS coordinate information received from either its on-board GPS unit or from external GPS devices.

Once these captured 'geo-images' are transferred to a PC, they are automatically converted to shape files or merged to geo-databases for instant integration into Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Points representing each image's position may be hovered over to display a thumbnail, or clicked on to access the full-size image.

In addition to storing GPS data in the image, the camera also utilizes a user-configurable data dictionary for tagging pictures with workflow-related information. These attributes are easily accessible from the GIS layer table for automated database integration.

"The Pro G3 is designed to provide GIS users with a simple and seamless method to integrate images into mapping applications," said Jeff Lengyel, Marketing Manager of Ricoh's Digital Camera Division. "Until now, there has been no single-unit solution to address the imaging needs of the GIS community."

The ruggedized camera uses a CompactFlash slot to accept WAAS-enabled GPS cards. For applications that require even greater precision, the camera is capable of receiving NMEA data streams from external GPS devices via BlueTooth.

"We needed a way to identify and photograph more than 30,000 street lights," says A.J. Romanelli of EMA, Inc., a workflow optimization company. "After researching all available options, the Pro G3 stood out as the optimal device for our application. The camera did exactly what we needed it to do and allowed us to finish the project ahead of schedule and without errors."

FEMA has adopted the Pro G3 to photograph storm damage in the southeast United States, while archeologists in Maine use it to scout out dig sites; the camera is being used to track hiking trail conditions; the U.S. military is using the camera in Iraq; universities, advertising agencies, insurance agents, realtors, government agencies, engineers, National Park personnel, farmers, and even museums are finding that their GIS workflows have been optimized since adopting the camera.

The Pro G3 GPS-ready digital camera features a 3.34 Mega-pixel sensor, a 3X optical zoom with the ability to mount accessory lenses, video and sound capture capabilities, and direct connectivity into IP networks via wired or wireless LAN.

Audiovox Introduces Rear Projection Flat Panel TV

Audiovox Corporation is expanding its flat panel TV line into the large screen arena with the introduction of its first 56-inch, rear-projection flat panel model. Tom Malone, senior VP, Sales, of Audiovox Electronics Corp., the Company's wholly-owned subsidiary, made the announcement.

Tom Malone, Audiovox Sr. VP of Sales says that DLP projection has become a favorite with home theater enthusiasts. These units deliver very good black-level performance, require no maintenance to preserve sharpness, are thin and light compared to CRTs, and many systems are computer-capable.

Malone notes that although Plasma and LCD flat panel televisions seem to be all the rage these days, reflected by the growing numbers of consumers reaching into their pockets to buy the stylish sets, they are still out of reach of most average household budgets and with DLP getting more affordable it is also gaining in popularity among consumers.

"As a result, rear-projection TV, with its lower pricing but high performance, is attracting lots of attention to retailers and their customers," says Malone.

The new Audiovox 56 inch model has a 16:9 aspect ratio, integrated HDTV tuner & NTSC Tuner, high resolution display, super-wide viewing angle, POP function (Picture-Outside- Picture), PIP function (Picture-In-Picture), PIP with multi-screen function (easy view from 4 to 12 different screens at the same time), convenient front panel A/V connectors, 12 digital & analog inputs, optional base stand, remote control and 56-inch digital light processing TV. MSRP is $3,295.

In addition to the rear projection system, Audiovox is introducing a 37- inch (16:9) HDTV-ready monitor, (model FPE3705), that features SRS surround sound and 3:2 and 2:2 pull-down with motion compensation, progressive scan DVI (Digital Visual Interface) with High Definition Compatible Digital(R) (HDCD(R)), which is a patented encode/decode process for delivering the full richness and detail of the original microphone feed on Compact Discs and DVD- Audio. HDCD-encoded CDs sound better because they are encoded with 20 bits of real musical information, as compared with 16 bits for all other CDs. With HDCD, the listener gets the body, depth, and emotion of the original performance not a flat, digital imitation. MSRP: $2,800.

Sandisk Combines SD Card and USB Flash Drive

SanDisk just introduced a very cool new flash memory card with built-in USB connectivity.

You can just plug the SD card into any SD card slot such as the one used in most digital cameras, and then plug it into any USB port without needing an SD card reader to transfer data, images, audio or video between computers, digital cameras and other electronic devices.

Sandisk developed a new mechanical design that allows a high-speed 2.0 USB flash drive to be fully contained within the small SD card. The innovative mechanical design eliminates the need for a removable cap, and results in a dual functionality card that is fully SD compliant. The device also features an LED that blinks when data transfer is taking place so you can see when the card is functional as a USB flash drive.

The new Sandisk card will make transfers of data, music, photos, and videos between PCs and portable consumer electronics devices much easier without the need for a special SD card reader.

The first products to be released by SanDisk with this new technology are scheduled to be introduced in the first quarter of 2005.

Study Reveals Technology Picks for Consumers in 2005

BOSTON and LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Communications consultancy Brodeur today released results from a recent survey that puts Digital Cameras, DVD Recorders, HDTV, Digital Camcorders and Wireless routers/modems at the top of a list of more than 15 product categories consumers say they will buy in 2005.

The proprietary study of more than 2,500 Americans, conducted in November for Brodeur by Forrester Custom Consumer Research, probed Americans' attitudes about more than 80 brands, 35 consumer electronics manufacturers, 20 cable/satellite and wireless service providers, a dozen online service companies and more than 15 retailers, both traditional and online.

"This study clears up many of the blind spots marketers have when trying to target communications to consumers about technology products and services," said Michael Brewer, executive vice president, Brodeur. "We now have a much better picture of who exactly is going to buy all the new technologies out there, but more importantly, how they go about gathering information about technology. This will help us develop communications programs for our clients that have more impact in the market."

Mass Confused?
The study follows the various sources consumers use to gather information about technology—from news articles to advertising to web sites to in-store interactions with retail sales people. It also identifies how confused consumers feel about nearly 20 activities considered every day use of technology. A "Confusion Index" created by Forrester for Brodeur puts the average consumer confusion at .277 on a zero to 1 scale with one representing "extremely confused." The activities consumers find most confusing: adding memory to a digital camera and sending text messages from their mobile phones.

Nearly 50 percent of consumers who rate themselves as "extremely confused" say they have delayed the purchase of a new technology product by more than a year from the time they first considered it. While 20 percent of this group says they delayed their purchase because they were confused by it, 25 percent say they bought the product even though they were still confused.
